What to do if a payment fails to fund
If a charge to your payment method doesn’t go through, the payment shows Funding failed and you’re notified with the reason. Fix the cause (top up funds or update your payment method), then use Retry funding — you can switch to a different method when you retry.
Sometimes a payment can’t be funded — the charge to your payment method didn’t go through. The payment shows Funding failed, and you’ll get a notification so you can fix it.
Why funding fails
The reason comes from your bank or card issuer. Common ones:
- Insufficient funds
- Card declined, expired, or blocked
- Bank account not verified
- Amount limits on the card or account
What you’ll see
- The payment’s status changes to Funding failed.
- You receive an in-app and email notification — *“Action required — payroll run funding failed”* — including the reason for the failure.
What to do
- Check the reason shown on the failed payment.
- Fix the cause — top up the account, or update/replace your payment method. To add another method, see Add a payment method.
- Retry funding — choose to retry, optionally with a different payment method.
- The total is re-checked when you retry (including fresh currency rates). If it changed significantly, you’ll be asked to confirm before the charge.
Warning: In the rare case the charge actually went through on the failed attempt (a bookkeeping mismatch), retrying recognizes this and recovers the run without charging you again — you won’t be double-charged.
If funding keeps failing after you’ve corrected the payment method, contact support with the payment reference.
