How invoice funding works and how long it takes
When you pay approved invoices, they’re batched into one payment, your payment method is charged (funding), and once that settles each contractor’s payout is sent. Card payments clear quickly; bank (ACH) payments take a few business days. The exact estimated funding date is shown on the payment.
Paying invoices happens in two stages: first your payment is funded (your payment method is charged and the money settles), then each contractor’s payout is sent. Understanding the difference explains the timeline.
What happens when you pay
- The approved invoices you pay are batched into a single payment run.
- Your selected payment method is charged for the total — contractor amounts plus processing fees and any currency conversion (see Payment processing fees (card vs ACH)).
- Once that charge settles (funding), each contractor’s payout is released.
For the steps to actually pay, see How do I review, approve, and pay contractor invoices?.
How long funding takes
It depends on the payment method you use:
- Card — clears quickly, often the same or next business day.
- Bank account (ACH) — takes a few business days to settle.
The exact estimated funding date is shown on the payment run, based on your bank/card and the processor — there’s no fixed number that applies to everyone.
Funding (your charge settling) is separate from the payout reaching the contractor’s bank. Even after funding completes, the transfer to the contractor takes a little longer — see How the payout date is calculated.
Note: Two stages, two timelines: funding is your payment method being charged and clearing; the payout is the money then moving to the contractor’s bank. Each adds its own processing time.
Scheduled (pay later) payments
If you used Schedule Payment, nothing is charged until the scheduled date. On that date the charge runs and funding proceeds as above.
Funding statuses
- Funding — your charge is being processed.
- Funded — your charge has settled and payouts are being distributed.
- Funding failed — the charge didn’t go through; see What to do if a payment fails to fund.
